Cupping is one of the oldest forms of manual therapy. It originated thousands of years ago in China. Now commonly used as a complementary therapy to massage, cupping works to loosen tight and painful soft tissue regions including muscle, skin and fascia. By creating a vacuum inside the cup, the affected soft tissues are drawn upwards into the cup via suction. The vacuum effect creates changes in the targeted tissues including increased blood flow, decreased pain and a reduction in the adhesive attachments between the skin, muscle and fascia. Cupping is often the therapy of choice when aiming to reduce chronic muscle tightness in the shoulders, the muscles of the neck and upper back and also in the lower back and pelvic regions.
